Nunneries

The Buddhist Women’s Educational Society works closely with the Tibetan Nuns Project in achieving its objectives to support education and empowerment of nuns.

Through a well-established and efficient individual sponsorship program run in partnership with the Tibetan Nuns Project, we support the education and other basic needs of over 1000 nuns living in seven different nunneries located in the North Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal.

We are committed to being fully transparent about how sponsorship funds are used.

Individual sponsors receive regular updates about and letters from the nun they sponsor so they can be in contact and clearly feel how their support is making a difference.

We also support infrastructural development and maintenance of these nunneries based on need and availability of funds.

Nuns not living in Nunneries: Some nuns prefer to live on their own and are not attached to a specific nunnery. They are often older nuns who are interested in meditative retreat rather than in learning higher Buddhist philosophy.
