The Buddhist Women's Educational Society (BWES) was established in 1996 to work with the Tibetan Nuns Project (TNP) to respond to the influx of nuns escaping from Tibet and arriving in northern India seeking education and religious freedom. TNP USA is the core funder for all our projects.
BWES works closely to educate and empower over 1000 Buddhist nuns living in India. We have built two new nunneries and support nuns in seven others. We provide sponsorship which pays for education, food, living and medical expenses.
BWES works closely with the Tibetan Nuns Project to support over 1000 nuns across India, providing education, accommodation, and long-term institutional support.
To contribute to the preservation of the unique Tibetan Buddhist philosophical and meditation traditions endangered by the Chinese invasion of Tibet.
To empower and improve the overall status of women, particularly Buddhist nuns, in education, health and spiritual well-being.
To provide traditional courses in Tibetan and Buddhist philosophy, as well as introducing modern and secular subjects.
To provide training and opportunities for Buddhist nuns to take their place as educated female teachers in the Buddhist community and the world at large.
