The newly built Retreat Centre at Shugseb Nunnery allows nuns to enter short and long term retreats in accordance with their Nyingma tradition of deep spiritual learning and contemplation. Constructed on a steep hill within the nunnery complex it provides a peaceful space with a wonderful long view over the valley, ideal for meditation and personal spiritual growth.
The Retreat Centre was formally inaugurated on 18th February 2026, coinciding with the first day of Tibetan Losar in a ceremony presided over by Khenchen Pema Sherab. On completion of a ritual led by Jigme Namgyal Rinpoche, the first eight retreatants entered the carefully designed closed facility on 30 March 2026. They included six of the newly enthroned Khenmos, along with two Lopenmas who have completed their studies and are trained teachers. They have all undertaken short retreats in the past so are familiar with the retreat experience and are well prepared for a period of long, intensive practice.
